Off i go...

Chester is a lovely city. So I’m always sad to wave goodbye to it. But less so when I know the sun, sea and sand of Majorca is waiting. I set off from Chester train station in the early hours with a smile and my luggage, before arriving in London.

Traveller's Tip

My journey was more expensive than flying, but so enjoyable. To keep the costs down a bit, book your train and ferry tickets in advance.

Under the channel

There are trains. And there’s the Eurostar. It’s so fast and comfortable – there’s even a bar/café. I was half way through a book when we pulled into Paris three hours later. Two short stops on the Metro to Gare de Lyon, then I was on my way to Barcelona.

Crossing
through Europe

This was an amazing experience. Not just because the trains were on time. I took a seat at the top of the double-decker train to take in the views of the beautiful countryside. In between bites of flaky French pastries, I chatted to my fellow passengers (this isn’t compulsory).

on the ferry

Barcelona is an incredible city. I didn’t have time to properly explore, but I did get a chance to tuck into a delicious dinner while I was there. If I do the journey again, I’ll definitely make sure I spend a night (maybe two) here as well.
Traveller's Tip

Don’t nod-off on the train journey though the coastal areas of southern France. The huge wetlands either side of the train are full of flamingos.

On the ferry

I took the overnight ferry to Palma, so not much to look at. I was really excited to get there, but that wasn’t what kept me awake. In hindsight, I should have booked a cabin, as sleep eluded me in just a seat. Perhaps my younger ‘backpacking’ self needs to mellow a little.

I made it!

I docked in Majorca at 6am and jumped on a bus to Port de Soller. I arrived in time to have breakfast with my friends that flew in the previous day. They got there quicker, but they didn’t enjoy their journey as much as I did. It felt even better knowing I’d done my bit for the planet too.

Traveller's Tip

Plan in some treats along the way. A romantic meal in Paris (if you’re a couple). Or maybe stop off and spend a night on the French Rivera.
